Any parent of a newborn knows late-night feedings are part of the gig. But any seasoned parent will tell you how fast that newborn transitions to the infant and toddler stage. That’s where Michelle Lane, owner of Modern Cottage, comes in. When the owners of a one-story ranch in Plaza Midwood needed a nursery for their new baby, they didn’t have another bedroom to spare, so they hired Lane to create a nursery in their existing guest room. “This is both a guest room and somewhere they could crash in the middle of the night during her infant stage,” Lane says. “They can wheel the crib down the hall to their bedroom when they have guests, and it’s easy to transition after she’s out of the crib, so they don’t have to redo the entire room again.”

UP THE WALL

Lane, who had worked with the homeowners on previous renovations, was already familiar with their style. “She was a big fan of Chris Loves Julia and that cottage aesthetic,” Lane says. “She wanted it to feel really girly, but still fit with the rest of the house.” Instead of hanging wallpaper in the entire room, Lane decided to create an accent wall with a tulip patterned wallcovering from A-Street Prints. “When we showed her that floral wallpaper, she flipped out and had to have it.” To complement the pink and sage palette, she painted the doors and trim a darker green.

MIXED & MATCHED

The homeowner purchased the beech wood crib from Stokke, and Lane found the textured rug at market. She dressed the window behind the bed with blush drapery panels from West Elm and had Roman shades custom made for the other. The white nightstands are from TOV and the gold wall sconces came from Wayfair. “Those were a budget find,” Lane says. “They look similar to Arteriors’, but these are less than $150, so a good score.”

SLEEP CYCLE

Lane was already “down to the wire” to get the room done before the baby was born when they found out the bed they’d ordered wouldn’t arrive in time. Fortunately, one of her junior designers came to the rescue. “A team member agreed to sell this never-used upholstered bed to the client,” Lane says. “So we brought it to the house and assembled it in time for her to come home from the hospital.” Now, she says, it’s a space where the new parents can rest with their little one, but it’s also a room their daughter can grow into. “It’s obvious it’s a little girl’s room,” Lane says, “but it’s not too kid-like or juvenile.”
