A picnic may sound nostalgic, but eating outside on a lovely day in Charlotte is a great way to enjoy some of the city's greenest areas. Criteria for a good picnic spot: Green grass, space to spread out a blanket and a lovely view.
1. Freedom Park
Though it's good for biking and playing and just in general a good place to go with the family, it's a great place for a picnic by the pond. 1900 East Blvd.
2. Romare Bearden Park
This uptown park has a big green space for spreading out a blanket, kicking a soccer ball or tossing a Frisbee, etc. It is across the street from the BB&T Ballpark. During Charlotte Knights' baseball season, you can hear the crack of the bat during games. There's also water play on hot days, so plan to wear suits and bring towels. From May-August, enjoy the Music Lunchbox Series, Tuesdays and Fridays, noon-1:30 p.m. 300 S. Church St.
3. Independence Park
Located in Elizabeth, this park has a playground in addition to sand volleyball and picnic shelters as well as plenty of grassy areas. Three eateries — Adams 7th Street Market, Hawthorne Pizza (who makes great sandwiches in addition to pizza) and Sabor Latin Street Grill are just across the street if you feel like picking up takeout for the picnic rather than packing your own. 300 Hawthorne Lane.
4. The Mint Museum Randolph
The area in front of the Mint Museum at Randolph is a nice grassy green area. It's quiet, too. Picnic and then go explore inside. Free admission on Wednesday evenings after 5 p.m. 2730 Randolph Road.
5. First Ward Park
This newly opened park has a nice grassy green knoll and a fun fountain. It's also steps away from 7th Street Market if you need to pick up some cheese, sandwiches, brownies, wine, coffee … etc. ImaginOn is also across the way if you feel like a library excursion after your picnic. 301 E.
