Great Halloween Books for Kids

Check out these great Halloween picture books for your child.

Halloween is right around the corner, and children are busy planning their costumes and dreaming of treat bag full of candy that the holiday will surely bring.  What better way to capture their excitement this month than with some fun Halloween stories?  Here are a few great ones you can check out at your local library branch.

Ten Orange Pumpkins by Stephen Savage (2013)

Ten orange pumpkins sit, fresh off the vine, but what will happen to each of them on this spooky Halloween night?  This counting book uses beautiful, stark illustrations to reveal that yet another pumpkin has disappeared as each page is turned.  Children will enjoy seeing all the many Halloween characters that show up on these pages, including a witch, a mummy, a black cat, and a ghost, just to name a few.  Older readers will also appreciate the clever ways in which the pumpkins disappear, until there is only one left for the perfect jack o’lantern.

It’s Raining Bats & Frogs by Rebecca Colby, illustrated by Steven Henry (2015)

It’s time for the annual witch parade!  Delia can’t wait to fly in the parade- it is her favorite event of the year.  Unfortunately, it rains on the parade, so Delia decides to cast a spell and make it rain cats and dogs instead!  When this turns out to be an even bigger disaster for the witches, Delia experiments with making it rain hats and clogs, and then bats and frogs.  What a mess!  Delia quickly learns that water isn’t so bad after all, and the witches have a blast at the rainy witch parade.  Your preschooler will love the rhyming spells that Delia casts, as well as the funny and detailed illustrations.

Pete the Cat: Five Little Pumpkins by James Dean (2015)

 “Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate…”  Children love the classic Halloween rhyme, “Five Little Pumpkins,” and Pete the Cat makes it even more fun!  Pete the Cat lends his usual pizzazz to this well-known rhyme.  This book is peppered with quirky characters, such as a frog disguised as a witch, flying a broom/scooter hybrid through the sky, which will keep children laughing.  This book will be a hit with preschoolers, as well as older fans of Pete.
