5 Tips for Back to School Success

Back to school is such a bittersweet time. On the one hand, your nerves are probably shot and you can’t wait for the kids to go back to school. On the other hand, once school starts, you’ve got homework, sports practices, and a host of other activities that need attending to.
Chores
The key to a successful school year lies in not trying to do it all yourself, but training your children to be an integral part of the smooth functioning of your home. Assign chores, and at the end of the week base their allowance on the percentage of chores they’ve done. It is never too early to learn performance based rewards.
Backpack Storage
Mornings run smoother when kids aren’t running around looking for their things, so create an accessible backpack storage area and get them in the habit of keeping all of their school related items there.
Morning Checklist
Using a whiteboard, create a list of things your child needs to do every morning before school. Having them check off each item as it is done gives them a sense of empowerment and keeps you from sounding like a broken record every day.
Jitter Glitter
Sometimes kids get stressed about school. They might be nervous for the first day, or maybe they know they have a big exam. The night before, sprinkle some glittery party confetti (available at party supply stores) under their pillow and tell them it is “Jitter Glitter” and it is there to take away their jitters and help them sleep. Don’t use regular glitter because it will be a nightmare to clean up!
Success Wall
Create a special display area to show off the good grades or artwork that they bring home from school. Knowing their parents are proud of them will encourage them to continue working hard at achieving continued success.
