Reid Park's New Public Art Inspired by Community Roots

Reid Park Neighborhood Park has unveiled a new park design and pieces of public artwork.

Thanks to collaborative efforts of Neighborhoods in Creative pARTnership, Reid Park Neighborhood Park has unveiled a new park design and pieces of public artwork by the artist team of Lauren Holtzapple, Shaun Cassidy and Lauren Doran:

“Origins,” the gateway artwork located at the park entrance, honors Amay James and Ross Reid, who were influential in founding the neighborhood.

“Community Spring,” is comprised of three boulders and textured concrete seating, paying homage to the neighborhood’s spring, street patterns and tradition of quilting.

“Life” is a piece inspired by the okra plants found within early residents’ gardens.

Dylan McKnight developed the park design (with the help of residents from Reid Park) while attending the graduate program in urban design at UNC-Charlotte. 

The City of Charlotte, the Public Art Commission and ASC launched the Neighborhoods in Creative partnership initiative in October 2013 to bring more neighborhood-based public art to the city. Future public art projects are planned for Elizabeth, Sedgefield and the Shamrock Drive Corridor.
