Jess Ebert had already worked on a number of rooms in her clients’ Dilworth bungalow when they hired her to redesign their 4-year-old son’s bedroom. “With this house, we did a phased approach,” Ebert says. “Phase 1 was four years ago, when she was pregnant with their second, and we got them set up with some foundation pieces.” This time, the homeowner was pregnant with their third baby, and they needed Ebert to create a functional bedroom that both of their boys would eventually share. She turned a storage bench beneath the window into a cozy nook and furnished the space with pieces that left plenty of room to play. “With kids’ rooms, you want to create a space that has longevity; you want it to grow with them,” she says. “If you’re going to invest in a space like this, you want it to still feel current in five years.”

BLUE STREAK

Ebert decided to keep the blue patterned Serena & Lilly wallpaper and paint the white molding, baseboards, and storage bench in Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy to freshen it up. “We talked about taking (the bench) out and creating something different,” she says, “but decided to paint it navy and add a new cushion to make it feel intentional.” She completed the nook with navy striped throw pillows made with Kravet fabric.

MAKE ROOM

“They didn’t have a playroom in the house, and this room wasn’t huge, so we tried not to overcrowd it with furniture so they could still get on the floor and play,” Ebert says. She chose a bed with a gray upholstered headboard from Article and a blue wood dresser from Anthropologie. “We were trying to balance out so much blue in the room,” she says. “We leaned into it, but also wanted to bring in other wood tones and some gray from the rug.”

THOUGHTFUL ACCENTS

Ebert chose white bedding with navy embroidered stripes and tassels from Crate & Kids, and added a pop of yellow with the squiggle pillow from West Elm. The wrapped leather lamp has a silver base that complements the hardware on the dresser. For the window, she installed a custom roman shade made with green patterned fabric from Rebecca Atwood. “The window treatment added another layer and dimension on top of that blue,” she says. “Adding the green made it feel special.”
