Gray Walker’s clients had a 2-year-old and a newborn when they hired the designer to modernize their dated, two-story Myers Park home. “They purchased this home shortly after their wedding and started a massive renovation,” Walker says. “The goal was to give the interior architecture a modern, clean vibe with loads of detailed cabinetry and contemporary millwork.” For the baby boy’s nursery, Walker added a wood accent wall, a window seat, plenty of storage, and one very bold pop of blue.

BUILD IT OUT

To give the plain room some character, Walker installed a natural wood accent wall and a built-in window seat. “We built out that whole area and added drawers at the base of the window seat,” she says. “I redid all the shelves with modern and abstract placement to make a modern, asymmetric display wall.” She painted the shelves a moody blue and chose a “really high gloss” to make them pop.

READ THE ROOM

Walker anchored the room with a gray striped rug from Stark and a lucite crib from Plexi-Craft. She finished off the window seat with blue plaid drapes and a fabric-backed, pinstripe wallpaper by Phillip Jeffries. “He can use it as a reading nook as he gets older,” Walker says. “It’s not too baby-like. The rug feels like you could be in Aspen, then the wallcovering feels like you’re in the middle of a Holland & Sherry showroom.”

MAKE IT YOURS

The homeowner is an avid art collector and fell in love with artist Donald Martiny’s large-scale, gestural paintings. “They look like a giant brushstroke, and she knew she wanted one of those pieces for the nursery,” Walker says. “The art is a bold pop of blue, and the room is a really cool mix of styles. It has this British gentlemen-meets-Aspen lodge vibe.”
