Windy Hill Orchard & Cider Mill is less than an hour drive and grows Stayman Winesap apples. Everyone over age 2 must have their own pre-purchased bag to enter the orchard. Bags can be purchased at the farm stand. Prices range from $5-$25. Carrigan Farms

Apple picking begins September 6

Apple Hill Orchard

Apple Hill Orchard is located just a few miles off of I-40 in Morganton, near Hickory. In addition to picking apples, explore the cider mill, Farm Market, and bakery. The orchard has 18 varieties available for u-pick and an additional four varieties in their Market. Picking passes are required for pick-your-own.

Sky Top Orchard

Sky Top Orchard in Flat Rock, North Carolina, is two hours from Charlotte and has 22 varieties of apples. Find great mountain views and enjoy apple-cider slushes, apple-cider doughnuts, and hot caramel apples. Kids can visit the barnyard animals and the playground, and see the cider press at work.

Less than two hours from Charlotte, Millstone Creek offers pick-your-own Saturdays with advance reservations. The Orchard at Altapass is a nonprofit land preservation located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. U-pick is available Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with guided picking on the hour. While you’re there, enjoy hiking trails, hayrides, bird watching, a pollinator gardengeneral store, and live music on the weekends.
