Today’s the day we kick off the Fit Family Challenge. Charlotte Parent, in partnership with Coca-Cola, CVS Pharmacy and Carolinas HealthCare System, are motivating families in Charlotte to get moving toward healthier, happier lives with free fitness classes, expert advice on exercise and nutrition for the whole family, and some great prizes, including a grand prize trip to Universal Orlando® Resort.

Here’s how it works: Signup online. It’s free to register and participate … really, FREE, no cost to you at all. After you signup, we send you a personal login and password where you log your family’s daily activities for the next eight weeks. The more minutes of activities and healthy habits you do, the more points you earn. The more points you earn, the more times you are entered to win prizes. In addition to the grand prize, we’re giving away weekly prizes like tickets to Carowinds, CVS gift cards, passes to the N.C. Zoo … and the list goes on.

Chances are you and your family already doing things that you can earn you points. Does your child attend sports practice or dance class each week? Do you eat three to five servings of fruits and veggies a day? Did you take a walk even if it’s just to walk the dog? Awesome, those activities can award you points in the Fit Family Challenge! And we’ll give you more ideas for how to find time for fitness with a family, shortcuts to eat healthy, and how to juggle those stacked schedules with tips from a panel of experts.

From Zumba to yoga to fitness classes for kids, we’re also offering a variety of free fitness classes with local fitness partners beginning today, April 15 through June 9. Try out something new and you’ll earn 100 points for each class you attend!

Register now, then download this kids activity tracker to hang on the fridge for kids to mark their own healhy habits and activities, and feel proud to see their progress displayed each week. Check out the frequently asked questions for more details. Remember taking the first step toward a healthier living is the best step you can take for you and your family.

For a bit of extra motivation and mom-encouragement, single mom Marlo Zappley, along with her two children; and the six-member Cram family, are going public with their participation in the Fit Family Challenge. The two Charlotte families are letting us look into the sucesses and challenges of making exercise and healthy habits part of their busy routines. You can read about their journey, as well as tips from the team of experts that are working with them, in the Fit Family Challenge blog.

“Exercise puts you in a good mood and gives you more energy,” says Carolinas HealthCare physician Tara Branton. It is also a way for a family to spend quality time together, she says. I coudn’t agree more. Sign up now and join in the fun!
