The Soda Shop
Step into The Soda Shop, and you’ll feel like you’re stepping back in time to an old-fashioned diner. Nestled in historic downtown Davidson, The Soda Shop offers a picture book of town history with walls adored with old photos and newspaper clippings.
We took our kids there one evening for dinner and enjoyed the casual atmosphere. I ordered the homemade chicken salad sandwich (which also is available as a wrap) and was pleasantly surprised — it wasn’t dry and bland like chicken salad often is at restaurants. It was creamy and flavorful. And I highly recommend it with a side of The Soda Shop’s famous sweet potato fries. Dipped in breakfast syrup, these fries are practically a dessert.
For a twist on the typical cheeseburger, try the pimento cheeseburger with a side of curly fries. The pimento cheese is homemade and adds a special zest of flavor. My husband said the burger was scrumptious albeit a little greasy, but his motto is “There’s nothing better than a greasy hamburger.”
The kids’ menu features the staples — from cheeseburgers and hot dogs to PB&J sandwiches and mac & cheese. Each meal is served with chips or cole slaw. For an additional cost, fries, onion rings or a fruit cup are available. My 3-year-old twins downed grilled cheese sandwiches, but the highlight of their dining experience was drinking chocolate milk and gobbling up the gummy worm that comes with each kids’ meal.
Specialty beverages are a must-have at The Soda Shop. The fresh-squeezed Limemade and Pink Elephant (strawberry juice and Sprite) are a delight. I’m a personal fan of the old-fashioned Cherry Coke, made from fresh cherry juice (not the pre-canned stuff you buy at a store). I also recommend upgrading the Cherry Coke to a Cherry Coke Float, or another ice cream soda.
Seating is limited at The Soda Shop, and as a family with small children, we felt somewhat cramped with little room for squeezing in high chairs and diaper bags. It’s best to get there before prime eating times — especially at lunchtime and on the weekends.
