Makkas Restaurant
Looking for a nice, quiet restaurant in Matthews? Tucked away in Windsor Square next to Fancy Feet Dance Studio, Makkas Restaurant has a lovely relaxing atmosphere to enjoy a family dinner. With its mix of Italian, Greek, steak and seafood, it was the perfect place for my husband, 9-year-old son and his friend to have dinner one Sunday evening.
We had heard about Makkas on numerous occasions, but had not had the opportunity to try it. Not knowing what to expect, we walked in and were pleasantly surprised. The serene décor in rich tones of red and the soft music playing in the background helped to create a tranquil mood.
We started our meal by sharing one of their most popular appetizers — potato-wrapped shrimp. Served on a bed of lettuce, six jumbo prawns were wound tightly in delicate spaghetti-like strings of potato. It was one of the most usual appetizers that I’ve had, but also one of the best.
The entrees did not disappoint. My husband had halibut and I had the Chicken Francese. Our son stayed traditional with capellini with marinara sauce (meat sauce also available) from the kids’ menu, but his more adventurous friend went for the fried shrimp – not always a common item to see on a kids’ menu. Both said they liked their meals very much, as was evident from their clean plates.
My chicken was very flavorful and moist — lightly battered and fried and then topped with sautéed red onions in a white wine lemon butter sauce. It was served with a side of angel hair pasta. My husband’s halibut had a definite zesty undertone to it, but he admitted that while it was very good, he thought perhaps the flavoring overshadowed the taste of the halibut.
Makkas has a wide range of entrees on their menu. From fajitas and pizza to lobster ravioli, mahi mahi and Kobe beef. They have Greek items like Souvlaki and Moussaka, Italian favorites such as Fettuccine Alfredo and Lasagna or just good Southern staples like Shrimp & Grits or BBQ Ribs. For cocktails and after-dinner drinks, be sure to check out Makkas’ beautiful bar.
Dessert looked too good to pass up. With choices like Bananas Foster Ice Cream Cake, Key Lime Pie, Crème Brulee and Baklava, it was hard to decide. But in the end, we chose the Tiramisu and the Philadelphia Super Cheesecake, which was super indeed, especially topped with a delicious strawberry topping.
Makkas is a wonderful family-owned restaurant and a great place to bring your own family. They are open every day for lunch and dinner.
