2020 has been a tumultuous time. In this year of ups and downs, the most popular checkouts for children are not surprising. Books on kindness, friendship and being yourself saw some of the highest borrowing rates at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. These six feel-good favorites of children and their caregivers gave your friends and neighbors a “hug in book form” in 2020.
Pete the Cat’s Groovy Guide to Kindness by Kimberly and James Dean

The Great Eggscape! By Jory John and Pete Oswald.
Another character making a reappearance in 2020 was Shel from The Good Egg by Jory John and Pete Oswald. While Shel was one of the instigators (and not a very good friend) in his initial appearance, in The Great Eggscape! he takes center stage as the reluctant seeker during an egg-scapade with the other eleven eggs from his carton. What’s more fun than worrying about when they will return? Finding friends and frolicking together, of course!
Fire Truck Vs. Dragon by Chris Barton and Shanda McCloskey
An unexpected friendship between seeming opposites is the highlight of Fire Truck vs. Dragon by Chris Barton and Shanda McCloskey. Their favorite activities surprisingly complement each other, allowing this book to celebrate friendship in unexpected ways. Share their frolicsome fun with your favorite fire truck and dragon fans!
Monster’s Trucks by Rebecca Van Slyke
Monster needs a little help with sharing in Rebecca Van Slyke and Joe Sutphin’s Monster’s Trucks. Monster is a little blue guy with big construction vehicles and a big issue with sharing. In this interactive homage to The Monster at the End of This Book, you, the reader, provoke Monster by pushing all his buttons while operating the trucks. Will Monster make the connection between sharing and friendship?
Be You! by Peter H. Reynolds
Sharing, being patient, being kind – those are all part of what makes you, you! Be You! By Peter H. Reynolds is a celebration of all the wonderful actions you, the reader, take, that make you, you! In a year filled with difficult moments, Be You! is a reminder for 2020 of the important need to “Be You!”…”no matter where your journey leads.”
You Matter by Christian Robinson
School Library Journal, in its “Best of Picture Books 2020” list, describes You Matter by Christian Robinson as ”a hug you can read.” Everyone has bad days, and You Matter chronicles some of the worst! In the end, though, what is important is that “you matter!” The feel-good message alongside colorful acrylic and collage illustrations make this 2021 Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Community Read choice a book to read over and over!
