Electronic Etiquette Do's and Don'ts
Is your electronic communication polite and effective? Sometimes we send the wrong message!
Most Americans receive and send about 100 text messages a day, receive an average of 120 emails, and post several things on social media each day. Kids and adults seem to be communicating more through text, email, and social media sites than they do in person so it’s important to make sure that we are communicating effectively and… politely.

Q – People communicate through text quite a lot. What problems can arise with texting?
- The auto correct feature on texts can completely change what we are wanting to say. Sometimes it’s funny, but other times it can get us into trouble!
- We can tend to use so many abbreviations that others cannot even understand what we are saying.
- People use text too much to communicate when it would be better to simply call the person instead!
- Never send a picture or write anything in a text that you wouldn’t want others to see! Kids getting into trouble this way far too often.
Q – Email communication is essential for business, but many times emails can be misinturpreted. What tips do you have for us for email etiquette?
- People can misinterpret what you write in an email especially if it is short or when you write in all caps people think you are screaming. Be careful about the tone of your email and think about how others might read it.
- Make sure you have good grammar, that the emails are not too long, and that you are very clear in your message.
- Do not copy people who don’t need the information and remember to change the subject line as needed.
Q – There are so many social media sites and people post pictures and make comments all the time. What should we know about social media etiquette?
- There are consequences for posting something – a picture, video, comment – so make sure it will not hurt anyone including yourself!
- People tend to write mean things because they feel safe hiding behind their computer. Think about what you write and how it will affect others.
- Know that whatever you post will stay out there forever and can be shared with anyone at any time. Employers do google your name before an interview and many times will not hire you based on your electronic footprint.
