Charlotte-Area Schools Dig in with Green Teacher Network

The Green Teacher Network is launching a School Garden certification program at 10 schools in the area. These schools are working toward a goal of engaging 15 percent of teachers and staff in gardening know-how with the help of community partners, including Chefs Move to Schools.
GTN supports garden programs at 185 schools in the area, but the certification initiative trains teachers so growing, harvesting and preparing food can be tied into classroom curriculum through an intentional annual gardening plan.
“We believe we can advance academics through relevant hands-on learning, improve health through increased consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables through growing, and increased activity through gardening,” says Edna Chirico, executive director of GTN. “We also believe this approach will improve awareness of our natural environment, support local farmers and increase awareness of the food eco-system.” gtncharlotte.org.
