4 Ways to Encourage Summer Reading

Reading315

Combat summer brain drain with these tips from Emily Nanney, children’s services coordinator at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library.

1. Read for 20 minutes each day. Children who read over the summer are more likely to be on grade level or above grade level, and ready to learn when returning to school in the fall.

2. Read together. Pick out new books that you can sit and read together, including funny books or books that interest them to help and develop those necessary early literacy skills.

3. Read as a family. Adults who model reading over the summer serve to encourage children to read as well. Consider listening to audio books together on road trips over the summer.

4. Join the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Summer Reading Program to earn prizes for reading this summer.
