The North Carolina Science Festival kicks off April 10 and runs through April 26. One of the many events around Charlotte is Get S.T.E.M Ed., April 11 at Queens University where children can take a virtual trip across natural habitats of North Carolina, including the mountains, piedmont and coast.

Through a variety of science-based activities, participants fill up a “passport” with stamps from different regions as activities are completed. The event takes place inside of the Rogers Science building, a platinum LEED certified building that holds a variety of labs, a greenhouse, a theater and water tables. Each floor of the building represents a region, and each region has area-associated activities. For example, the coastal floor has a lighthouse exhibit powered by a potato battery. Children can explore the lighthouse and learn how the battery operates.

Guests are also invited to observe the native species exhibits that includes flora and fauna with inquiry-based activities. Each participant can discern the species for themselves based on observations and characteristics. The event is free and open to families with children between the ages of 5 and 14.
