Just as the school year wraps up for Charlotte Mecklenburg School students, a virtual rally of support is underway by Charlotte Mecklenburg Public School Friends. The virtual rally is taking place today, June 9, through 6 p.m., June 10 to show support for CMS teachers and schools.

Public School Friends is a nonpartisan effort created by a group of Charlottean concerned about the future of public education in light of the recent budget cuts. The group created a petition on change.org that has been signed by more than 1,000 supporters encouraging legislators to support pay rasies for teachers and increased school funding. (You can learn more about what CMS is requesting for funding here).

The two-day virtual rally is a way for supporters to show their support for CMS with simple actions. They are asking parents and supporters of CMS to post photos or videos to their social media accounts, change their avatars and profile photos and including the hashtag #CMSpsf to maximize impact. “June 10 is the last day of school for CMS students, and it’s also the day before the CMS budget is presented to the county commission,” says Sandra Conway, one of the volunteer leaders of PSF. “The virtual rally is a great way for the community to celebrate the end of the academic year and thank the dedicated employees who mean so much to CMS, while letting our lawmakers know that they must reverse the budget-cutting trend of the past few years.”

PSF also plans to have a presence at the Mecklenburg PTA Council’s “block party” community rally planned for Thursday, June 11 at 4 p.m. at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center. Supporters are encouraged to wear red. Following the rally from 6 to 8 p.m., PSF is hosting a “Raise Your Glass to Raising Teacher Pay” social at Blackfinn Ameripub at the Epicentre.
