Little Free Library Book Swaps

Summer is waning, and that means the school bells will ring in just  few short weeks. I’m all for enjoying every last minute of summertime, but part of that enjoyment can include reading. If you’re finding the kids are bored with their books, entice them with a trip to the Little Free Library.
The Little Free Library movement is making its way through Charlotte. The take-a-book, return-a-book concept recently opened at Atherton Mill in South End. It’s sponsored by Charlotte Center City Partners and the South End Neighborhood Association. The Little Free Library isn’t a brick-and-mortar shop, but rather a little bookcase of shorts set up on a post, much like a birdhouse, where you can drop off a book in exchange for a book in the box.
There are others around town, and all over the world for that matter. If your vacationing, check the map to see if there’s a Little Free Library nearby. I think it’s a great idea for connecting with neighbors. If you’re interested in starting one and getting registered with the Little Free Library movement, go to littlefreelibrary.org. Seems like it could be a great project with the kids to make the “book”house, and then set it up. Plus what a great way to clean out old books in exchange for new without being overwhelmed at a big bookstore (no offense big stores).
Happy reading.
