THE PINT-SIZED FOODIE: An introduction to Ted’s Montana Grill
The latest from our kid food critic

Each month, our 11-year-old resident foodie visits a different Charlotte-area restaurant that’s kid-friendly—but not a kid-topia. He orders something he’s never tried before and reports back with his recommendations for kids and their parents. Here is his review of Ted’s Montana Grill in Waverly.
Where it’s located:
It’s in a place called Waverly in south Charlotte that has a lot of stores and restaurants in it.
What we ordered:
We got the Bison Nachos ($15) to share. For dinner, Daddy and I split the Delmonico Ribeye ($45), Mommy got the St. Phillip’s Island Crab Cakes ($36), and my sister got the Kid’s Cheeseburger ($10). For dessert, we got the Fresh Baked Cookie & Ice Cream ($8).
How it works:
It’s a regular sit-down restaurant, but you can sit inside or outside. We sat inside cuz it was pretty hot out.
Why I liked it:
The food came out pretty fast and they made me a grapefruit mocktail! (Edit note: The PaNOma, $8, is on the Zero Proof menu and can be made for kids.) Also, my steak had a little American flag on it.
What I didn’t like:
It was kind of hard to find a parking place.
What I tried for the first time:
I never had bison on my nachos before. It was really good—I could barely tell the difference between them and regular nachos.
Why other kids should try it:
They have a really good kid’s menu with grilled cheese and chicken tenders and stuff, but they’ve also got a kid’s steak and bison meatloaf if they want to try that. (Edit note: Each kid’s meal comes with a choice of buttered carrots or fresh-cut fries.)
What I liked best:
For your side, they let you order half onion rings and half fries.
Why parents will like it:
They have beer and wine and all the grown-up cocktails, and the menu has a lot of stuff so you can get burgers and salads and steak and fish.
Why I would come back:
Our dessert came with a snickerdoodle cookie, but they said they change the cookie flavor a lot, so I want to see what else they’ve got.
