THE PINT-SIZED FOODIE: An introduction to SouthBound
The latest from our kid food critic

Each month, our 10-year-old resident foodie visits a different Charlotte-area restaurant that’s kid-friendly—but not a kid-topia. He orders something he’s never tried before and reports back with his recommendations for kids and their parents. Here is his review of SouthBound in South End.
What we ordered:
We got Chips and Salsa ($1.50) with Queso ($9) and Guacamole ($9). I got the Carne Asada Fajitas for One ($15) and my sister got the Kids Quesadilla ($6.99). Mommy ordered two tacos ($5.60 each) and a Classic Margarita ($10). (Editor’s note: All proceeds for chips and salsa go to Second Harvest Food Bank.)
How it works:
They’ve got tables and booths inside and some more tables outside, but it was kind of cold so we grabbed a booth. Once you sit down they take your order. Me and my sister went outside to the grassy area to play cornhole but the chips and dips came out really fast so we came right back.
Why I liked it:
The food didn’t take long and you don’t have to sit at your table the whole time cuz there’s other stuff to do. There’s a big van with a surfboard on top that’s parked in the middle of the restaurant and they let kids hop inside and play. Oh! And they also brought our lemonade in kid’s cups that you can take with you.
What I didn’t like:
Ummm…nothing? It was all pretty good.
What I tried for the first time:
I’ve had fajitas before but most places only have the big orders that you have to get for two people. I liked this one cuz it was small enough for one person and still filled me up. These ones also came with those cooked bananas (read: fried plantains) that were pretty good.
Why other kids should try it:
They’ve got a kid’s menu with tacos and quesadillas and chicken tenders and stuff, and they get to pick a side so my sister got her quesadilla with apple slices. We got Churros ($5.70) for dessert, too, and we thought it would just come with one but there were like six churros in the basket!
What I liked best:
Hmmm…the churros, prolly.
Why parents will like it:
They’ve got lots of different margaritas that grown-ups like. Also, you said it wasn’t very expensive.
Why I would come back:
Taco Tuesday!
