Room We Love: Sleep and Study

Brenna Morgan, owner of Brenna Morgan Interiors, describes her daughter Finley as “12 going on 25.” When Finley decided she’d outgrown the robin’s egg blue walls and “matchy-matchy” décor in her bedroom, Brenna transformed it into a polished yet cozy retreat that could double as a workspace during homeschool. She chose colors and patterns that appealed to a teen girl’s evolving tastes and anchored it with furniture that would carry her into adulthood. —Taylor Bowler

ROOM TO LOUNGE

Finley, whose favorite color has always been blue, requested a navy and white palette. In place of the grow-with-me bed that had once been her crib, she upgraded to a Pottery Barn daybed so it felt like she was sitting on a couch. “She wanted a space to lounge, so we added a cute chair where she can put her feet up,” Brenna says. “It worked out really well for homeschooling.”

ESTABLISH A FOCAL POINT

To keep the white room from feeling like a lightbox, Brenna created a focal wall covered in a navy patterned wallpaper from Thibaut. She added sconces from Ro Sham Beaux on either side of the bed so Finley could read at night, and refinished a nightstand she already had in her garage. She chose navy and white bedding from Pottery Barn Teen and topped it with accent pillows she had custom made in a floral Thibaut pattern.

GO THE DISTANCE

Above the daybed, Brenna hung framed photos of Finley’s favorite things. “My daughter rides ponies, so we put in a picture of each pony she’s had and a few of our dog,” she says. She chose simple white frames from IKEA that would be easy to rotate whenever Finley wants to swap out the images, and completed the space with a small fig plant from Lowe’s. “She has very strong opinions, so I didn’t present her with anything too childish or trendy,” Brenna says. “We wanted this room to last her until graduation.”
