Work + Life = Weisure For most working parents, hardly a day goes by when work and family don’t overlap. You’re at work hurrying to meet a deadline, and your kids call after school to ask where the peanut butter is. Or you’re getting everyone ready for bed at night, and a colleague calls to make sure you’ll be there for the meeting in the morning.

Now there’s a new term to describe a parent’s constant sense of being on call for both work and family: weisure, the combination of work and leisure. While it isn’t a term that applies only to parents, it seems to be appropriate for those working parents who are struggling to find balance in their lives.

The Ever-Evolving Life of a Working Mom In 2005, Wendy Sachs was the mother of a toddler and an infant. Having worked as a public relations executive, congressional press secretary and television producer, she cherished motherhood but also relished the excitement of her career in the media. As she struggled to find a balance between being a mom and a working professional, she wondered if it was possible to really have it all — happy, well-adjusted children and a fulfilling career.

Her quest led her to interview more than 100 women, and as a result, write “How She Really Does It: Secrets of Successful Stay-At-Work Moms” (De Capo Press 2005). Charlotte Parent recently caught up with Sachs.

Managing the E-Mail Overload The ever-available Internet is addicting, and it has many people checking work e-mails 24/7.
You’ve probably found yourself saying “I’m just going to check this real quick,” and then emerge from your home office an hour later to find your kids still sitting in front of the television and nothing accomplished. Whether you’re constantly distracted by the little beep of an e-mail alert or just spending hours out of your week weeding through spam, there are ways to manage your inbox to keep from feeling overwhelmed.

BusinessTravel BaBees, a nationwide baby equipment rental franchise

 How long in business?
Travel BaBees celebrated its third anniversary last fall.  We began franchising in February 2009.

What inspired you to go into business for yourself? After discovering the industry, I quickly realized that there was a growing demand for a high quality and reliable service provider.  As a mother of two, I understood the challenges families face when traveling with young children and I wanted to provide the solution. It’s been a great opportunity to serve traveling families throughout the United States.

 Who is your mentor?

I have been blessed with many mentors.  I am most inspired by my mother’s work ethic and my sister’s creative spirit.  My husband and children are my foundation and give me purpose every day.  The Travel BaBees franchisees push me to continue improving both personally and professionally.  Last but not least, my customers are also my mentors.  They praise us for our accomplishments and always let us know when we need a little improvement along the way…

Advantages of being a business owner :

There is no doubt that owning a business takes hard work, dedication and not to mention time (a lot of your time).  In the end, the sense of accomplishment and pride at the end of each day is unparalleled.  With a quick shuffle in the schedule I am available for every important moment with my family.  It doesn’t get better than that!

What's most important when starting your own business?

You should first be passionate about your business.  If you are in love with the idea, there is a good chance many other people will love it too.  Second, you should have a plan.  Without a good plan you may spend countless hours and money on things that do not bring you any closer to your goal.  With every action, hopefully there will be a good reaction waiting on the other side.  Third and non-negotiable, you must be dedicated to your business.  There will be peaks and valleys, and it is a very emotional ride, but in the end it’s so worth it!

Advice for women starting a business:

Be passionate about what you are doing.  Surround yourself with a positive and supportive community.  Educate yourself and plan.  Most importantly – be patient.  Success usually doesn’t happen overnight, but if it does, congratulations!
