Amenities: The area's only out-of-hospital, midwife-run center, this nonprofit provides the Midwives Model of Care as an alternative choice. Women have the option of a water birth and the freedom to change position, eat and drink with minimal intervention. Amenities: A leader in neonatal care and expertise, and recognized by J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospitals Program for providing Excellence in Maternity Services. The doctors and staff deliver some 7,000 babies a year. Mothers who have been induced or are in their second stage of labor are guaranteed a one-to-one nurse-to-patient ratio. The maternity center includes 23 labor suites with state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and five rooms with Jacuzzi tubs to assist mothers who are having difficulty with labor. Carolinas Medical Center is the Regional Perinatal Center, with the largest neonatal intensive care nursery in the Carolinas, as well as the only ECMO (heart/lung respiratory assistance) system in the region. Provides 24-hour neonatologist, perinatologist and anesthesiologist care, as well as around-the-clock specialist care. Amenities: New spacious rooms where mom remains for the length of her stay including labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum. The center practices mother-baby couplet care, which allows for a newborn and mom to be cared for by the same nurse in the patient's room. Each room has a baby-shaped sink, sleeper sofa, small refrigerator, flat-screen TV with DVD and media card reader. Naptime is from 2-3 p.m. daily, and visitors are asked to stay in the family waiting room. There is a designated C-Section operating room and a Level II nursery staffed by a pediatric hospitalist for babies requiring special care.

Amenities: Comfortable labor/delivery/recovery/postpartum (LDRP) suites, with trained and caring staff members guiding mother and baby through those first hours and days together. For premature newborns needing special care, there is a Level III neonatal nursery. Through a new Progressive Level of Care initiative, infants with increased needs can remain with mothers to receive special care instead of going to the special care neonatal nursery. Staff includes neonatologists, registered nurses and neonatal nurse practitioners that offer the latest technology in a warm and supportive environment.

The infant security system delivers a high level of safety, continuously monitoring each baby's location throughout the stay. Security is further enhanced by restricted access into the department, including the nursery, closed-circuit TV cameras strategically placed throughout the facility, and patient and family education.
