741 Kenilworth Ave., Suite 202

(704) 336-2133

Voters must be a least 18 years old by election date and register at least 30 days prior to election.  To register, get a form from the Board of Elections office, any public library, driver's license office, major post office or town hall, or register by mail.

N.C. DRIVER'S LICENSE AND VEHICLE REGISTRATION

New residents have 60 days after establishing permanent residence to get their North Carolina driver's license.  Newcomers should bring their Social Security card, out-of-state license and proof of insurance to a testing station where they must pass a written test, road sign recognition and eye tests.  Road tests are given at the examiner's discretion.  Drivers 18 and older may apply for a driver's license or a learner's permit.  Drivers 17 and younger are provisional licensees.  Because these drivers have a much higher crash rate, special laws apply to them.

TAGS/REGISTRATION

A newcomer will have a minimum of 30 days to register a vehicle, but regulations vary because some restrictions are based on the regulations of a newcomer's previous state of residence.

VEHICLE INSPECTION

All North Carolina vehicles must be inspected annually by a state-certified inspection station.  The cost is approximately $30.
