Words of Wisdom From Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Messages to inspire and motivate children.
In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 16, share these quotes from Dr. King with your child. Discuss the impact of the Civil Rights Movement, and how his messages can be carried forward in interactions each day.
- On love: “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.”
- On faith: “Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.”
- On never giving up: “If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.”
- On happiness: “Those who are not looking for happiness are the most likely to find it, because those who are searching forget that the surest way to be happy is to seek happiness for others.
You can also venture out to the Gantt Center uptown Jan. 16 for events commemorating Dr. King's legacy. There are panel discussions, art-making workshops, guided tours, scavenger hunts, film screenings and more.
Moreover, take a minute to talk to your children about simply respecting and listening to others who are different from them. Introduce them to other Civil Rights leaders who paved the way for minorities to be provided equal rights. It's also a good day to talk about action, and how to be a role model. Check out SHARECharlotte.org for a website filled with volunteer opportunities in the area.
